Things to know

Please don’t flash this ROM on other Sony Smartphone. It will brick your phone. It is only for Sony Xpeira Z. Be-aware that your root will be lost after this process and you have to root it again, if you want to.

Before you start

Make the backup of your data and your current ROM before you start this tutorial. Everything will be deleted from your internal storage. If anything bad happens to your phone than I am not responsible.

Please make sure the necessary drivers are installed for your device on your computer. PC Companion is recommended because it installs the required driver.

How to install official Kitkat 4.4.2 ROM(10.5.A.0.230) for Sony Xperia Z?

Step 1

Download the Flashtool and install it to your Computer. Just follow standard installation process you should be good to go.

Step 2

Now you need to download official Kitkat 4.4.2 ROM(10.5.A.0.230) for Sony Xperia Z. I have made the list for Sony Xperia Z firmwares below.

10.5.A.0.230 Customized US(torrent)

10.5.A.0.230 Central Europe 1(XDA)
10.5.A.0.230 Commercial&Journalists(torrent)

10.5.A.0.230 Generic GR ((Unbranded/Greece)(XDA)

10.5.A.0.230 Customized US(torrent)

Please report the broken link, if you found one. Do you have the link for latest version of Android Kitkat for sony xperia devices for different locations, just put the link on comment box below and help other users. I will also be updating other links if I found one for other locations.

If you don’t find your version here just search it on the internet. You should be able to find.

Step 3

After installing the Flashtool and downloading the firmware, copy your downloaded firmware which is in .ftf format on the Firmware folder on the installation folder of flashtool. It General Installation path is C:/Flashtool/Firmwares.

Step 4

Now Run the Flashtool.exe, connect your device to the computer and see if your device is detected by the software or not. Make sure flashtool recognizes your device. If it doesnot recognize than navigate to C:/Flashtool/Driver which has the Flashtool-drivers for all Xperia devices, you may install drivers through Flashtool in case you face any difficulty at the time of flashing. Access the Flashtool-drivers and install Fastboot & Flashmode drivers as well first.

Step 5

In Flashtool, click the lightening button on the top left, select whether you want to run Flashmode or Fastboot mode. Flashmode is the one you’ll need most probably while you’re trying to install an ftf file, select it and press Ok.

Step 6

Select the firmware or the file that you want to flash here, if you don’t know what other options do than just leave it as default and hit Flash at Right bottom side of the windows.

Step 7

As soon as the file is loaded, you should see a pop up, prompting you to connect your device to the PC in Flashmode. Now, turn off your device, and connect to your PC using the original data cable while keeping the Volume down key pressed. This is for flashmode.

I changed the theme so it looks a little bit different.

After you’ve connected your device successfully, the Flashing will start, wait and sit back while the flashing gets completed. You should see the logs now, as soon as it is done the ”Disconnect and restart your phone” will appear at the bottom. Now just Disconnect your phone and restart your device. Now you have latest version of Sony Xperia Z Kitkaat 4.4.2 installed.

Root your Sony Xperia Z Kitkat

If you want to root your phone, than you can follow the tutorial here.

If any one have Battery drainage problem:

Some of the people were complaining about battery drainage. The root cause of this is related to the latest version of Google Play Services (4.4.52). Until a new version of Google Play Services is provided by Google either uninstall the latest update of Google Play Services (might limit use of Google Services like Youtube) or go to Settings > Google (accounts) > Ads > Tick the box for Opt out of interest-based ads and also disable back up of your data by going to Settings > Backup & reset (Personal) > uncheck the box for “Back up my data”.

If you are unable to uninstall the update for Google Play Services from Settings > Apps, go to Settings -> Security -> Device administrators and disable “Android Device Manager”. Also check the settings in the Play Store so that automatic updates is not enabled as this may update Google Play Services again automatically.

About the Torrents files:

Also, I would like to notify you that the download link to the torrent is not from me and is provided by . I have seen the issue with C6606, when you download the file it says it is for C6616. I don’t know if it is really for C6616 or C6606, but as to my knowledge there is not much of difference. I would like to ask you readers from T-mobile from US to make a ftf file for C6606 and upload it to some website and provide the link to me in Comment box. So that it will be useful for others users also. Is there anyone who could help me?

I own the Sony Xperia Z C6606 on T-Mobile 4G LTE in Phoenix,AZ, in US running 4.2.2. Will it remove all the stock T-Mobile apps? Email me asap

    • John

Ace let me know how it goes for you. I have the same phone and model number.

      • david lane

i also have the T-mobile version and installed this, it removed all the T-mobile apps but you can install them back from the play store.

        • Ace

          Even using T-Mobile hotspot?

          • Nope, I don’t think so.

          • Heathtrow

hey guys , i really need your help in getting my c6606 into flashmode. i had tried the volume up and volume down method but the flashtool does not recognize it when i tried to flash the tft file. it just pop up a window saying it still waiting for flashmode. can you guys help me ? reply asap.

  • Jen

I have a Sony Xperia Z c6606 on T-Mobile. Would this work for me to install the update? I don’t care about the T-Mobile apps just as long as I can update and have my phone still work.

    • david lane

      yes, it works perfectly fine.

  • John

Any other links for the c6606? The torrent stopped at 11% and now has no seeders

  • Ace

I noticed the file says for C6616. I’m kinda iffy on downloading it after seeing that in the filename

  • Genghis82

I have the Xperia Z C6606 for T-Mobile, and I can confirm that this method worked for my phone. My phone now runs Android 4.4.2. But in order to get the Flashtool to work on Windows, make sure you enable the installation of unsigned drivers. When you open the “drivers” folder in the Flashtool folder, install all the selectable files.

    • thanks for the feedback.

    • Nick N

Hey man, c6606 been constantly rebooting on its own when it is not being used after flashing to this firmware. any idea? Are we suppose to exclude baseband or something?

      • Genghis82

Try factory resetting your phone.. Because that sounds like a problem if davlich cache wasn’t wiped. If that doesn’t work, you can try reflashing the firmware.

  • John

One more question before I attempt this. I hear stories of horrible battery life upgrading. I found a fix for that online but was just wondering if you had any issues with battery life after this upgrade?

    • I have already tried this and I am using it right now. Till now I don’t have any issue. Remember to make a backup then, if you are so concerned about that. I would love to hear how it goes for you. If any problem then let me know. I would love to help you.

  • AceZ

Thanks for this dude. I tried it and it works fine. 😀

  • Sam Albalushi

can u give me the xperia zr kitkat link plz

  • John

I was very nervous at first cause I didn’t want to brick my phone. I went ahead and just did it. No problems worked fine 🙂
    Thanks for the tutorial Bhattarai

I’ll let you guys know if I run into to any problems like battery issues or anything but so far so good.
    Xperia Z C6606 T-Mobile

  • Ace

Hey John are you able to use your mobile hotspot on tge T-Mobile c6606? Thats the only thing that im waiting to hear on since I use mine for my school

  • Ace

T-mobile c6606 users, my xperia z just did a ota opdate but it installed 4.3 -.-

    • I had the same problem because I installed other custom rom before and due to some problems I had to flash the sony’s android version 4.3. After that I cannot update the phone to kitkat 4.4.2. Same thing happened to me but using this method I was able to install kitkat on my phone. Let me know how it goes for you.

      • Ace

thanks for the reply Bhattarai, I havn’t been able to try this method yet, I mean so far the 4.3 update isn’t that bad. But however if I install this update, how would I use my T-Mobile Hotspot? I know that there are some T-Mobile apps you can restore from google play but T-Mobile’s mobile hotspot isn’t available on the play store. I don’t want to try a 3rd party cause I’m not sure if i’ll get charged for it when I have 3GB’s of hotspot on my T-Mobile Plan.

  • Adam

is it including the baseband? does it have the call over wifi function?

I have a Sony Xperia Z tablet sgp311 . Would this work for me to install this rom?

    • I have not tried on Sony Xperia Z tablet sgp311. If you try than just drop a comment here if it worked for you or not.

  • Mike T.

I just did this 4.4.2 flash for my c6606 t-mobile xperia z. My phone keeps restarting whenever it’s not in use now…

    • factory reset your phone. If it didnot help than try again the same steps again. Should work.

  • Harsh Patel

Will it work perfectly in c6603

    • I have been using it on c6603 and I don’t have any issue till now.

  • I would be happy if you could give me some feedback. Thanks.

  • Guys help me by deactivating ad blocker on this website. I also use ad blocker but I help developers and other useful websites by deactivating on their websites. If you think I helped you by the tutorials, please help me too.

  • Charles Master Draco

Hello there I have the 6606. I did this update and now although my phone appears to be running fine now says it’s a 6616 in the about section. Will this cause any problems? Is this fixable?

    • Moises

What version did you have before 4.3?

      • Charles Master Draco

        yes 4.3

    • Genghis82

6606 and 6616 are essentially the same model. Think of 6616 as the stock model, and 6606 as the model loaded with T-Mobile apps.

  • Moises

If my phone is updated with the T-Mobile update of 4.3 can I still flash this

    • Charles Master Draco

You can as I had 4.3 and did the update without any issues

  • jason

where is the link to the C6606 fTf

    • as @genghis82:disqus said before. “6606 and 6616 are essentially the same model. Think of 6616 as the
stock model, and 6606 as the model loaded with T-Mobile apps.”

      • Jason

Thanks I found one by NUT

  • Jason

I used this too update to 4.4.2 on my c6606, but now my mobile data will not work, wifi does but when ever i go to the mobile i get can no conect

    • umm… heard for the first time. I don’t think it has anything to do with the flashtool problem. May be you have to download the settings for internet connection or you have to do some additional settings. After I flashed my phone, I had to download the settings for the internet connection form my provider in order to use internet.

      • Jason

Yeah i keep getting unable to connect to proxy server

        • Genghis82

Did you check your cell network settings? The first time I flashed my phone, I had to select TMO LTE and select “register”

          • Jason

Yeah I figured it out, Had to get the internet connection setting. from t mobile and set it up to the right ones

  • Matthew Gottlieb

I just flashed my C6606, just realized I lost root. Is there a way to root this and does anyone have a link to a guide? I have been searching and all I can find is for unlocked bootloaders

  • Marvin Agra

Hi i have c6603 4.3 10.4.B.0.569 Non rooted and Locked bootloader. Is it possible to root my phone and what rom should I download to update to kitkat?

    • Ofcourse you can install other rom. It only depends upon you which Custom Rom do you want to install. Cyanogenmod, Aosp and many other awesome ROM. But first see if your mobile has a update to kitkat and if you like it. If not you always have many other options.

  • Ace

Hey Jason, is this the T-Mobile app version?

  • Sanith Kizhake Kuttikara

@thenepaltech:disqus Thank you so much. I am enjoying Kitkat now. But my next for surely would be nexus or iphone. Because software updates for Sony is pathetic in India

    • Welcome @sanithkizhakekuttikara:disqus . Yes, I heard sony is not updating sony in india till now. Sony users in India have to wait a lot.

      • Vishal Khedkar

@thenepaltech:disqus will a Customized US firmware work for my Indian Xperia Z? Won’t give network issues?

        • @vishalkhedkar:disqus It should work but I am not an Sony Xpeira expert to give you the guarantee.

  • The flashtool gets stuck while trying to sync with github. Takes way too long, like about 30 mins. And does not move forward from there. I have also installed the drivers for xperia z. Is it normal and should I continue to wait?

    • Vishal Khedkar

30 minutes? Never happened with me, takes less than 30 secs. Check if your internet connection is stable enough.

  • Gary

Thanks so much for this. It Works fine with my Xperia Z c6602 i am from India .. mobile internet is also working (Airtel)

  • Kurosaki Rifqi

do not damage the smart phones that are in use?

  • Gaurav Sahu

when u say root will be lost. what do u mean by it ?

  • If you have root access on your current jellybean ROM or whatever you
have and you update to Kitkat using flashtool, then after root access
will be lost on Kitkat. But not to worry. If you again want root access,
    refer to this link.

  • Gaurav Sahu

thanks for ur answer. but i just want to know what is the draw back of loosing root?

  • Some Guy

I have the t-mobile c6606 and used the c6616 rom file and can confirm it works great. However I don’t see the option for wi-fi calling anymore :/

  • ankit rawat

can c6602 get upgrade to c6606 ? how to make backup of ROM ?

    • If you have CWM(ClockworkMod) or TWRP installed you can do ROM backup from recovery mode.
You can install c6606 on c6602 but there are so many risk involved, I personally will never do it.

  • Some Guy

does anyone have the c6606 rom? i forgot to make a backup of it and can’t find it anywhere >_>

    • BlinkyBlink

Which C6606 rom your looking for? i have 4.1 up to 4.3

  • timon

I did upgrade my ph from 4.3 to 4.4 but i can’t restore my backup file. while I try to restore , it says “selected backup records cannot be used due to incompatible software versions. Please select a more recent backup file” . If there’s any ways to solve this . Plz help me.thz

    • I don’t know exactly why did this happen, but one of the simple solution is go back to 4.3 and restore your backup. As you backedup your data using 4.3 there should be no problem to restore. Then download some backup program from playstore and backup your data again. For eg. titanium backup or whatever you like. Than again upgrade to 4.4 and again install titanium backup and restore your files using Titanium backup app.

  • Joey

Can someone please give me a link to download the T-Mobile 4.3 stock rom (10.4.c.0.814) cant seem to find the FTF file on the net. Thanks.

    • BlinkyBlink

let me know if you still need the stock 4.3 tmobile update..

  • Abdullah

Will I receive future updates from sony after I lash this firmware on my Xperia Z (C6603)
P.S. (updates for movies, album, software, etc)

    • You will get updates for movies, albums and so on through your update center.

  • Charles

It looks like there is another update coming 10.5.a.0.233 that the 6602/03 may already have available from what I was reading online. Can anyone tell me if the 6606/16 will be getting those? I can only seem to find the ftf for the 6602/03 models.

  • sandu

i have flash to us version of kitkat fr sony z now i want get back to indian version of kitkat…plz help

    • You should have made the backup of your ROM before you installed US Version of Kitkat. Anyway, I don’t have the Indian version of Kitkat, You can search on Internet or XDA developer.

    • Jusniz

install the drivers. check in C:/Flashtool/Driver and maker sure you choose your device drivers also check if your phone is in debugging mode.

  • shahrukhkhan

can this be applied on xperia z1..? if not, u know where i can find tutorial? thanks bhattarai diwas..u’re awesome

    • Yes, it should work. Just be sure you use supported ROM for your specific model.

  • Jusniz

I upgraded my Xperia C c6602, everything works fine (thanks man) but i can notice a
drain of my battery and also sometimes the phone overheats. Can i know
why and what to do? because i am already thinking about downgrading to

    • Did you already tired the way that I explained above in the tutorial? The root cause of this is related to the Google Play Services (4.4.52). Just uninstall the latest update, it should be ok. If it doesn’t work than it is better you downgrade to jellyBean.

    • calilifestyle

i have a question can you still do wifi calling . The last time i did this kind of thing a t-Mobile mu wifi calling would no longer work.

  • Emmanuel

Can I use this method on my Xperia L? Plus, my phone is rooted does it even matter? One last question, does the link provided above for Greece works for all xperia models, I mean it states “unbranded”…? Thank you in advance. 😀

    • Yes, this method should work on Xperia L. It doesnot matter if you phone is rooted or not. Only install the version that is same as your smartphone model.

  • audi0artist

will this wrk on the xperia z1s? after the 4.4.4 update, my camera is not working at all and i want to go back to 4.4.2

  • sherif

i have installed kitkat from herebut, now i wanna roll it back to my previous jellybean ,how can i do this and will it be an officiall version or what ?

    • Yes you can roll back to your previous jellybean. Just follow the same tutorial as above but instead of downloading Kitkat firmware from above, download the jellybean firmware.

The link for C6606 gives you a C6616 install. This will unlock your phone from Tmobile. If they are your cellular provider make sure you select Tmobile as your provider when it gives you the option during setup.

      • phonefreak

should i now be able to use att then on this phone

      • phonefreak

Actually it doesnt i tried to put my friends att sim in my xperia and it still asks for the unlock code should lte work on tmobile still though

  • Niles Aronson

    Hey Bhattarai,

Thanks for the step by step instructions. I am going to attempt to update my C6606 later today. I am wondering though, I click on the link for the Flashtool, and my PC tries to download a .php file. I am unable to install that file. Is that a bad link? I did search on the Flashtool website and found the app, but it comes from a link that has a 1 hour download time. Is this legit? (this is the link I used for the program…http://www.flashtool .net/index.php)

    • I am sorry, that was a dead link. But now it should work. It may take sometime to download. If you go to the flashtool website and click on the download link it will take to some other website where you can actually download the file. it is legit but may take some time.

      • Niles Aronson

        Thank you.

  • Niles Aronson

    Update 9/16/:

I installed the firmware last night, and so far everything works perfectly. I did have an issue with battery drainage, and took the steps to limit Googles automatic uploading.

The link for C6606 firmware gives you C6616, but works fine. I did notice that the update actually unlocks the phone from Tmobile, and I had to make sure I selected Tmobile for my provider when it gave me the option. I’m guessing this is because the firmware is Sony’s official update, and was not a Tmobile version.

Kit Kat is a very clean look, and I’m very happy with the update. Thanks again Bhattarai for the step-by-step instructions; I have been wanting to update to Kit Kat ever since they first mention Sony Xperia was going to receive it (but Tmobile never provided an OTA update to anything higher than 4.3.2.

    • I am glad it worked smoothly with you.
